RFID
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and the Electronic Product Code (EPC) combine to provide a form of automatic identification and tracking of objects. RF technology has the advantage over bar coding in that it allows the client to uniquely identify each individual object as well as identify objects that are not line of sight.
Great Northern has developed an RFID initiative that assists our valued IT clients in achieving the next level of Business Efficiencies. Through our various industry partnerships, Great Northern has leveraged its expertise in the IT industry to develop the resources to help our logistics and supply chain customers realize increased operating efficiencies through the implementation of RFID technology.
An RFID system consists of a tag with its own unique identifier, or EPC, that is attached to objects at the container, pallet, case or item level. As a tag passes through a portal, RF waves are emitted by a reader that activates the tag and scans for the tag’s unique ID. The reader then passes this data along to an event manager that sorts the information and sends the data to the EPC Information Server (EPC IS).
The added value from having a RFID enabled supply chain is the ability to take real-time information and make the most informative decisions.
Key candidates for the use of RFID technology are those who are in need of a solution that will allow them to uniquely identify items in real time while reducing the costs associated with manual labor and human error.
